Because you can’t easily widen a single container, design around a long, narrow volume:
- Run circulation along one long wall; don’t put a central corridor (it wastes width).
- Place storage and built-ins against the walls to keep the floor clear.

- Wet wall: group bathroom + kitchen on one side so plumbing runs in a single chase.

A high-cube (2.90 m) unit gives ~0.3 m more height — enough for a sleeping loft over the bathroom/kitchen, roughly doubling usable area without widening the box.
Expandable / Fold-Out for Width
Expandable containers unfold on site to ~5–7 m wide, solving the width limit entirely. They need a flat pad and deployment space but deliver 2.5–3× the floor of a fixed unit.

- End A: glazed entry + sofa bed
- Middle: kitchenette along wet wall, bathroom opposite
- End B: wardrobe + desk
- Optional: loft over bath/kitchen for sleeping
Sample 40ft Plan (~28.3 m²)
- Zone 1 (end A): bedroom with loft above
- Zone 2 (middle): open living + kitchen on wet wall

- Add a central spine of built-ins to avoid corridor waste
Multi-Container Layouts
- Side-by-side: remove a long wall to make one wide room (needs a steel header).
- L-shape: two units at 90° around a courtyard.
- Stacked: bedroom above living; engineer the connection.

The widths above assume insulation is installed inside the ribs. Losing 100–150 mm per side to insulation and lining is normal, so design to the finished width, not the steel width.

A 2.35 m finished width fits a 0.6 m counter on one side, a 1.0–1.2 m aisle, and a 0.6 m tall unit on the other — provided you resist adding a second counter run on the opposite wall.
Three Layouts That Work in Practice
- Studio 20ft (couple): entry and glazing at one end, kitchenette and bathroom grouped on the wet wall, bed at the far end with a fold-down desk. Best when the unit is a cabin, office, or rental.
- One-bed 40ft: bedroom at one end with the bathroom beside it, open living and kitchen in the middle, storage along the spine. The most liveable single-container plan.
- Two-bed 40ft high cube: sleeping lofts over the bathroom and kitchen, living at the glazed end. Works where loft sitting height can be kept above roughly 1.1 m.
Layout Mistakes That Cost Space
- Placing the bathroom mid-wall, cutting the plan into two narrow zones.
- Using swinging doors in the narrow band instead of pocket or sliding doors.
- Spreading plumbing to both ends, doubling the service run and the cost.
- Ignoring insulation thickness, then finding the aisle 150 mm too narrow.
- Designing storage as furniture rather than as built-in volume.
